The Impact of This Blog

What the content of this blog means to you.

For some of you the content of this blog will provide some missing links to finalize your systems and help you be more efficient with productivity on the job. Others may find a tip or two or find the product reviews helpful but only a select few will notice the impact of the content posted here. You wont find any proprietary trade secrets of mine — after all — I am your competition. Some of the content found here might not be new to you but it’s how you use the content, when to use it in your systems and with what products benefit the system the most. I believe efficiency is more about product than it is about process and any process would be meaningless without an outstanding product.

To give you an idea of how effective the content of this blog can be, one other paint contractor and myself completed two 48hr 2-story Builder Association Homes and one ranch home in 24 hrs utilizing content from this blog. These homes are built from the ground up to ‘move-in’ completion in 24 or 48 hours so by the time it comes to painting them, there is little time left on the clock. If you ever get a chance to work on a home built in 48 hours — I would highly recommend doing it for the thrill of it. Everything you ever learned about painting is tested in 48 hours. It’s exciting to see the house getting framed in Monday morning knowing in 48 hours the new homeowners will be moving in.

Over the past few weeks I worked with 3 independent paint contractors to assist with increasing their productivity. I am always intrigued at how different painters do things. All four of us paint new construction homes and all four of us have a different approach, so different in fact there is a difference of over 289 man hours on a job. Let’s just say the low pay is $12.50 per man times 266 hours = $3,325 (that’s only the overage), but I happen to know two of his guys get $18 per hour or more. In other words, if I painted this guys house for him instead of his crew of seven, I would save the paint contractor $3325 instantly.

I studied the other contractor’s crew and how they do things and sure enough, lots of wasted time and no real solid plan. If I painted two of his homes, he would pocket an extra $6650 instantly, now let’s say I did four of them in a month for this guy like I do for myself on my own jobs, that would be $13,300 in his pocket saved based on what you will find on this blog. Who do you think is operating more profitable?

Obviously I do things very different if I can save two separate paint contractors around $13,300 in one month by changing the products used and the process in which to execute various systems.  This is what allows me to do in 70-80 hours what a crew of 7 does in 346+ hours. This entire blog is dedicated to how I make that possible and the countless hours I spend researching product and developing systems to be capable of doing that. These paint contactors are not new to our trade and I can tell you — just like the hundreds of other paint contractors I’ve worked along side, they are all set in their ways so you have to be open to change and to try new product and allow time for these changes to sync.

Two of the paint contractors I worked with had crews of seven guys painting a new home, the other had five. One house 2600 sq ft, the others 3,100 and 3300. One contractor asked me how long it would take to do the 3300 sq footer, I told him 70-80 max man hours, complete. He knows what I am capable of, after all that is why I was on his job. All of them create a ton of extra work for themselves by poor systems and or poor timing of the process and the lousy products hold them back.

For comparison, and based on the product available locally, I do not use any of the products these three paint contractors use, not the paint, not the brushes or rollers and not even the nail putty or caulk, none of it. This should tell you a lot about how product and process is key! What I can tell you is — they use the same products all the other guys use locally.

Most of my paint related tools are ordered online and none of them are mainstream products found at Sherwin Williams, ICI Paints or any other local paint store which should tell you a lot in itself. Extensive product testing enables me to refine product selection that not only performs great but also allows you to be more productive. Basically what this means is I DO NOT USE PRODUCT most painters use, around here anyway. They use the products they use because that's all they are offered at the paint stores. I choose to seek out better options with substantial advantages over my competition.

It’s still a mystery to me why many of the products I find most beneficial are not found here locally and Sherwin Williams, ICI Paints and Wooster are all headquartered here in Ohio. I see better product showing up at the box stores than I do at paint stores. I use many of the products found on this site regularly but if you gave me any other tools or products to work with on your job, I would not be anywhere near as productive nor will the finish be even close in quality. Believe me, if you gave me any other brush available, take your pick, I would not be able to do what I do. My systems are so refined that even when I am stuck with using alternatives — I see an instant decline in productivity to a point of frustration.
